How to Sell Sex When Money Is Short

In my previous post I looked at How To Make Money From Porn when Times Are Hard. Selling memberships to online sex sites takes hard work and determination, and when people are watching their every dollar you need to find ways to motivate them into buying.

So I thought I would share with you one of several little make money with porn schemes I am working on right now.

This is a new venture which I thought up in the shower the other morning. It seemed like a laugh, but who knows, it could sell!

So let me introduce you to a little idea for selling sex during the recession. It’s called Best Value Porn. Oh yes, and it’s a hardcore porn blog by the way, so if you would rather not click on that link, feel free not to

I have no idea yet whether this will work and make me money. The adult blog is brand new and I am only just beginning to build links for it. But it’s worth a try and it didn’t take very long at all to set up, with the help of the magic of FeedWordpress.

By the way, the text (limerick) on the front page of the blog is copyright, so don’t steal or copy any of it (I will check). Make your own poem or text if you want to try this and give it your own personal touch relative to the sponsor you are promoting.

A static page would probably have worked just as well for a small project like this, especially with some good anchor text backlinks and it’s something I am persuing for a similar scheme.

Either way, we’ll see if it works over the coming months as another little way to make money selling porn during a recession.

Can I Still Make A Living From Porn During A Recession?

This is a time when everyone is watching their cash, or perhaps wondering where their next dollar is going to come from. So you will be wondering whether now is the right time to make money from selling porn on the Internet.

First, I have to say that it is harder to make a living selling sex site memberships today than it was even a year ago. But it is still possible, as long as you work at it and explore all angles.

I am not the most experienced adult webmaster in the World by a long way, but I have been selling this stuff long enough to have learned that sex sells, even in a recession. And sellng porn is still one of the best ways to make a living online. If you work hard at it.

People will tell you that people cannot afford to buy memberships to online sex sites today, but stop and think about this one moment.

Most of us have had hard times at one point or another. Have we always reacted ’smart’ to this? Have we always scrimped and saved and never spent our money on any ‘little pleasures’? Unless it has been a case of not having a cent for the next meal for our kids, I bet most of us have ’splashed out’ on something we really felt we shouldn’t have; just to make life seem more tolerable.

Paying for a membership of an online sex site really isn’t that expensive. In fact, there are so many ‘one dollar trials’ today that anyone can get some porn pretty quickly just by registering their credit card. Of course, the idea is that the surfer will ‘forget’ and not cancel on time to be hit with a monthly fee, but even monthly fees are pretty damn reasonable, considering all that’s offered and, in any case, many surfers are smarter than that and will take their ‘1 dollar trial’ and then cancel that card.

Either way, on a Pay Per Signup basis, you will get paid for that sale. It is your job to get the surfer to the sponsor. After that, it is up to the porn sponsor to entice him into staying there and the best sponsors, with decent content, are very good at doing that. And so they should be - that is their job after all.

Revshare is, of course, a different matter. If your surfer makes a chargeback, you will lose all of your commission on that sale. Nevertheless, I still think personally that if you are working a good niche, with plenty to offer that the surfer cannot get elsewhere, revshare is still a viable option. But I think (and again, this is my personal view only) that when times are hard you have to choose those revshare niches with care that comes with experience of the sponsor’s content and how you find revshare with him or her is working for you.

I have written before here about Deciding Between PPS or Revshare. The rest is up to you.

So: How To Make Money From Porn During A Recession:

First of all, the usual rules apply. You just have to work even harder at them.

You have to be prepared to work very, very hard.

You have to want to learn and continue to learn.

You have to be able to be aware of changing trends and adapt to them (or even be ahead of them).

You have to ask questions of other adult webmasters. You can hide away reading webmaster boards and try to learn from the host of different advice given and you will learn a lot. But at some point, you will find your head full of so much conflicting information that (as well as testing it out yourself) you will have to ask questions to clarify these points in your head.

If you make these questions specific, you will get good advice and, also very important, you will make friends along the way. Which leads me onto my next point:

It is very hard to go it alone in any internet marketing work. It is almost impossible to do this when selling porn. You may need people to trade with and you will want to check them out with others.

You will definitely need to develop a team of people you can trust (if only a little), so that you can email them or send them messages via ICQ, when you do not want to post all your details on a webmaster board.

And when things get tough (see more about this below), it is good to share these times with someone who has ‘been there’ (we all have). You will not feel all alone then and that is important too.

When times are hard for surfers, you have to assure your surfers they are getting good value for money. They may have been quite happy to spend 30 dollars or so on joining a site just to test it out before the recession. Now many of them will want to be assured that their hard earned cash will be spent wisely. That’s where you come in. You need to emphasise the quality content your sponsor has; the extras he/she is offering them; the ’special offers for this week only’ so many of them push, and so on. You have to think like a hard-up surfer and ask yourself, “why would I sign up for this sponsor?” and work on that. These are basic facts for any time, but during a recession, you cannot make money without considering them.

Don’t make the mistake of offering too much ‘free porn’. I made that mistake at the beginning and I guess most of us did. But ‘free’ is very difficult to sell; that content would have to be extra special to convince an ardent ‘free surfer’ to part with his cash. Better be upfront and say you are promoting quality content which is unmissable and very good value for money, because the ‘free’ links may bring you loads of surfers, but all you will ‘gain’ is high bandwidth usage (which will cost you) and hardly any sales.

Despite what some will tell you, you have to ‘think out of the box‘. This doesn’t mean going off half-cocked on some scheme you think will make you oodles of cash, when chances are, it won’t. If you have a ’scheme’ like this, by all means try it out, but don’t spend lots of money on it or a great deal of time, unless after testing it out you find it to be working. The idea is to think ahead and use the above methods to work any new scheme. The best way is to go with what is already working for you and then ask yourself “how can I do this a little differently? Are there any other skills/tools I already have which I could put to this use?”

One thing you will find, as you try to make money from porn during a recession, is that the extra hard work involved will get to you. The vast majority of adult webmasters experience ‘burnout’. In this business you work long, odd hours and. although I would definitely advise taking breaks for exercise and fresh air, eating healthily, etc, it is the sad truth that most of us give scant regard to this when we are busily involved in earning a living online. The result is that we all, at some point or another, experience ‘burnout. Many will suffer this at regular intervals and just see it as part of the job.

So, what do you do about webmaster burnout?

You take a break. Simple as that. All that porn will still be out there for you to sell when you get back; all those blogs, sites and galleries you put online are still out there. True, some of them may not be getting as many clickthroughs as you get from submitting them every day, but if you have worked on your SEO strategies they will still be spidered and still getting hits and you will still be making sales. The recession seems like it’s in for the long haul, so there is no point in trying to beat it. Just go with your body’s instincts to rest. If you don’t, then basically you will be no good to anyone when you are an exhausted, gibbering wreck.

In my experience of ‘burnout’ (and I get it fairly regularly - about once every three months or so), when I take that break, it takes all of the first week to get all the stuff I am working on out of my head. It is only by the second week I can relax enough to take a walk, go to the gym, or sit and watch tv without constantly thinking of what I ’should’ be doing. But it does pay off. By the third week I am fitter and ready to go and again able to work hard and fast.

We all ‘rest’ in different ways. That is just what works for me. I long ago got over the fear that “I may not want to return after a break”. That feeling goes once you realise all you needed was some space to relax.

And don’t forget that Being An Adult Webmaster Is A Real Job. So treat it that way. If you worked somewhere nine-to-five (or whatever), you would have to take holidays and the job would still be there when you got back. It works the same way when you are selling porn, even during a recession.

The difference with making money from porn is that you choose your hours and you are your own boss. Learn to make the most of that

A Brief Look at the Pros and Cons of Porn Marketing Models - TGPs

If you do not understand any of the terms used in this or later posts, check out my Porn Marketing Terms post and all will be revealed

Thumbnail Gallery Pages and TGP Submissions:

Many in the adult webmaster business will tell you that the ‘good old days’ of making lots of money from Porn by building Thumbnail Galleries are long gone and I guess they are right. Nevertheless, there is still money to be made out of submitting Gallery Pages (picture or movie clips) to TGPs (thumbnail gallery posts - link sites for thumbnail galleries), but there are also drawbacks for the newbie adult webmaster.

If you like the idea of making galleries every day and can perfect the technique so that your gallery pages are clean, attractive to the surfer, and well accepted by as many TGP sites as possible (and you learn how to stick to their rules), you can still make money by building thumbnail galleries.

If you would like to have a try at this, go to The Hun and click on the links to some of the Galleries there. If you think you could do as well (and make them very, very regularly - like all aspects of being an adult webmaster, this will take hard work), then this can still make you money. However, before you begin, I hope you have checked out adult forums for Thumbnail Gallery and TGP tutorials and suggestions on making templates, submissions scripts, etc (do a search at Netpond to begin with. It’s always a good place to start).

As for myself, I have tried making a few galleries and submitting them by hand, but it is not for me. I prefer writing more and I prefer building surfer hits more slowly (massive gallery hits are short-lived and to be successful the formula has to be constantly repeated) and you will see why I prefer building hits on a slower basis below. But I can see the attraction in making gallery submissions (and perhaps your own full TGPs - although this takes a great deal more work and relies heavily on making many good link trades). Pictures and Videos still attract and can stir the libido much faster than text in many (usually male) cases. The growth in popularity of tube sites tells us something - search engines love text, but surfers still love visual and (perhaps preferably) moving images. The winning factor appears to be combining the two and, most importantly, ensuring you get those links coming in.

The downside about Gallery Submissions and TGPs (apart from all the hard work of course)? A well linked Gallery Post will get you thousands upon thousands of visitors en masse. If you submit to one of the biggies, like The Hun, and are successful, you may suddenly find your little gallery (or hopefully galleries) being inundated with surfers.

“This is good.” I hear you say. Well, in one way it is, because you will usually need thousands of hits to make a sale this way, so the more hits you receive, the more money you should make. But, you will need adequate hosting to soak up all those sudden hits. If, for instance, you have a shared account on Hostgator, your site will be taken offline, because all those sudden hits will be eating up all the server resources for those who share your IP address.

Many cheap hosts, including Hostgator, are great for starting out with adult blogs and possibly static sites, and I recommend them for newbie adult webmasters starting to make money online, but as soon as you build galleries, free sites, static sites, or even blogs which get thousands of hits in a short space of time, you will have to invest in at least semi-dedicated hosting, or a host which allows for short duration, hard hitting pages (like newly-submitted galleries) and has hosting accounts which cater for this (I believe Naked Hosting offers this, although I am yet to try them out myself) . So think about that when you make and submit your galleries.

Therefore, with Thumbnail Gallery Pages and buiding your own TGP sites you have to weigh up these factors:

Are you going to be able to submit at least 2 new Galleries a day? (probably quite a few more - but not all to the Hun, by the way as that is every 3 or 4 days at most) Are you interested enough in this aspect of making money from porn that you will be prepared for all the hard and constant, repetative work involved? If the answer is yes, then you need to think about:

Will your website hosting be adequate for your requirements? (And most TGPs refuse submissions from free hosts - although sponsor free hosting, using your own domain name, is something to think about here).

Will the outlay, for sufficient hosting plus (as you progress), the submissions tools and TGP scripts, be worth it in terms of the return you think you can achieve?

If you can honestly answer “Yes” to those questions, then making thumbnail galleries and your own TGPs will make money for you if you do it right. It will not be as much money as you could have made a few years ago, but there again, that applies to many forms of work online, not only adult.

The other proviso I would add here is, make those galleries by all means, but watch trends very carefully and adapt your galleries to fit them. This will also give you ideas for other ways to make money from porn and maybe use those galleries as part of a larger project of your own design (not just your own large TGP).

Thinking ‘out of the box’ is the most successful thing you can do when making money from porn. Work with something; learn from it; and adapt it to suit changing trends and surfer requirements.

When you see many adult webmasters telling you that ‘TGPs are dead”, but you still see them making galleries and submitting them, ask yourself why. Are they really stuck in a rut, or have they found another way of using them which works better, so that they still make good money from porn?

a

A Look At Various Porn Marketing Models

In my last entry, I showed that there are many different ways to make money from porn. However, most of us will probably be looking to sell memberships to online sex sites, rather than writing adult content, building adult websites to sell, or any of the other ideas mentioned. In which case, browsing the advice given in adult webmaster forums and turorials will be invaluable to us.

However, the first thing we find in those forums is a host of differing advice and opinions. Some of the advice given may be intentionally misleading (some adult webmasters do not want newbies to succeed; they see this as less cash to go around). Nevertheless, most of the information will be sincere, but based upon the webmaster’s own experience of what makes money for him or her. And this will differ by individual adult webmaster. What works for one person, may work for another, but then again, they may simply fail at using the same method, because it is not inline with their particular likes, dislikes and skills.

Here are a few things you will be told:

TGPs are finished/TGPs will bring you lots of hits.

Free Sites are a thing of the past and a waste of time/Free Sites can be an ideal starting place for making money from porn.

Static Sites will not make you any money/Static Sites are the best for making money.

Porn Portals provide too much free porn for the surfer to lcik on a sponsor link/Porn Portals are an ideal way to keep surfers within your ‘porn empire’.

Adult Blogging is the only way to make real money from porn/Adult Blogging is not the only way to make money and can be a waste of time.

Splogs are vital/good/bad/a waste of time/an insult to real adult webmasters.

You should make your site as bookmarkable as possible or encourage subscribers to sign up for your blog’s RSS feed/Regular subscribers do not sign up with sponsors, they just want free daily porn.

You have to know html, css, php, web design, as an expert/you can get away with only a basic knowledge of web design.

Do not use free hosting/use free hosting as much as possible.

Do not use cheap hosting/cheap hosting is ideal for starting out.

Do not use the same IP address for all of your sites/blogs/splogs/tgps…

You must submit to directories/directories steal your traffic.

Link Trades are vital for getting backlinks/Link Trades will steal/skim your traffic.

Concentrate on Specific Micro Niches/Concentrate on best selling niches.

Entice your surfers with big pictures/use thumbnails only do the surfer has to click to the sponsor to see the rest.

Use softcore images only/hardcore but limited in time/size of image works best.

Free Porn will kill the adult market/Use Free Porn to your advantage.

The Adult Market is dead or dying/there is still plenty of money to be made from porn.

And so on…..

You will see that, apart from the question of using different IP addresses (which I strongly believe - from experience - to be important), I have used some of the pros and cons from each side of the debate.

The truth, I believe, is somewhere in the middle.

And it all depends on you and how you use your skills and apply your knowledge of the adult industry and of yourself to make money from porn.

In my next posts, I will look at a few of these models - TGPs, Free Sites and Static Sites and looking at their pros and cons.

Using Your Skills To Make A Living In The Adult Industry

When you start out as an adult webmaster, you will, hopefully, browse plenty of Adult Webmaster Boards to look for advice and tutorials. You may, like me, just jump right in and learn as you go along, but it’s probably better to learn a little more first. That way you may not make as many ‘newbie mistakes’ (but we all make a few, regardless…).

Either way, you have to begin somewhere and after you have found all that advice and tried some (or even most) of it out, you will probably end up totally confused! But at the same time, if you have studied carefully, you will have discovered that there are still very many different ways to make money from porn.

So one of the first things to ask yourself is:

“What am I good at and what am I not very good at?”

Writing Adult Content: I am good at writing text. I can write reams and reams of hardcore prose if required and it does make me money if linked well to a particular sponsor. One of the things which also brings me in some extra cash is writing adult content for other webmasters. It doesn’t pay that much, but it’s a pretty regular source of income, as many adult site owners and bloggers are crying out for good written content.

Other adult webmasters are not so good at writing. No big deal. However, having a reasonable command of English - or of the language you wish to market porn in - will certainly help. Search engines spiders require text, but the key factor here is relevant text (text which fits the porn niche you are promoting and the keywords and meta tags you are using - you can write thousands of words on your blog or site, but if they are not relevant to your niche, you will most likely be wasting your time). You can find text already produced by porn site owners at any good sponsor gallery. The key here is to re-arrange this text so it is unique to your post (and still contains a reasonable - but not over-stuffed - proportion of relevant keywords) and your text writing problems are solved.

Graphic Skills: You may have excellent graphic skills and be able to make your own gallery and blog headers which entice even the most ‘banner blind’ surfer to click on your sponsor link. In this case, not only will you have a distinct advantage over most of us, but you could also make some extra money out of your skill, by making headers and selling them to other adult webmasters. The only proviso here, for using them yourself, is you do still need text for the search engine spiders, otherwise the surfers turned on to your sponsor by your graphics will not be able to find you on the search pages in the first place. But once on your pages, those good graphic skills can still stand you in good stead.

Website Design: Perhaps you have a very good knowledge of html, css and php and know how to apply them well. We all need a basic knowledge of these, just to insert images and links in our text and to make our sites and blogs a little more unique, but some people excel at website design. Again, you can use these skills to provide other adult webmasters with the basics they require (adult blog themes, gallery themes, etc), but either cannot do well themselves, or prefer to pay someone else to make for them.

Website Applications: Likewise, an understanding of website development applications is a skill which can earn you good money from porn. Most adult webmasters require a multitude of tools to get the job done efficiently. Automatic blogging applications, porn sponsor gallery ’scrapers’, automatic gallery submitters and link list submitters are just a few of the appications required. There are some good tools out there already, but the market for these is not saturated as yet and if you have the skills to produce any of these or other appications which work well with porn, you will still be able to make good money from this.

Adult Website Flipping: Site and blog ‘flipping’ is still in its relative infancy. The idea is to build a blog or website so that it is completely ready to use and then sell it somewhere like Sitepoint or Digitalpoint (or even eBay, but this is usually less well-favoured and can provide problems with Paypal). Many adult webmasters (particularly those who have only a limited knowledge of css and php) are willing to pay a reasonable price to purchase a ‘ready to use adult website’, rather than do all of the basic setting up work themselves. A brand new adult website will not fetch very much money (as it will probably not even be in the search engines yet). The going rate for a ‘turnkey’ site can be anything from 20 to 500 dollars and will very much depend on how you market it and how well it is set up, but this is a growing business which you may like to consider, particularly if you prefer building adult websites to keeping them updated.

Those are a few of the ways you can use your own unique skills to earn a good living in the adult market. In the next article, I will write some more about some of the basic ways of selling porn on the internet and the pros and cons of each model.

And I hope by now you have realised that there is more than one way to make money from porn

PPS or Revshare - Another Point To Consider

In a recent post, I gave you many of the points to consider when choosing Pay Per Sign Up or Revshare when you want to make money selling memberships to online sex sites. I argued that Pay Per Sign works best with high converting porn sites which do not necessarily retain members, but Revshare may work best with porn sponsors who offer a large variety of very good content and in niches which convert and retain members.

However, as you will discover, sometimes a porn sponsor will offer you something more to consider than he had originally. In this case, the question of PPS or Revshare will occur again. I’ll give you an example.

A couple of my newer sponsors have, up until recently, given me the option of Revshare only to use in my affiliate links. These are well established and very successful adult sponsors, but I have only been using them for a few months. As far as I know, these sponsors are not connected, although recent aquisitions of smaller, but profitable, porn sites by larger sponsors ( the accumulation of successful sites by Dee Cash for example) may have happened here also, but at this point in time, I do not know for sure.

Recently, within a few days of each other, both of the sponsors in question have emailed me, with ‘a great plan to make more money’. They say that I am one of their affiliates chosen to have the opportunity to use Pay Per Sign Up affiliate codes when linking to their porn sites.

In theory, this sounds like a good offer. Both sponsors have high converting sites and I have made a fair few sign ups to each of them (remarkably so, as I still need to add their content to more porn blogs and sites). I must admit that the first time I looked at my sales stats with these sponsors and saw the small amount I would receive for each sign up, I did wish I had had the opportunity to choose PPS.

However, over the short time I have been promoting their porn sites, I have discovered that nearly every trial sign up membership has converted to a full paying membership. This, together with new sign ups for these two sponsors, has been bringing in a regular $100 dollars per month and this is growing as more members convert.

Now 100 dollars a month isn’t a lot in the grand scheme of things, but add this to regular payments from CCBill for your smaller Revshare sponsors, plus a number of cheques from some of your other Revshare sponsors, and you have a nice additional income. This definitely takes away some of the worry that your higher-paying Pay Per Sign Up sales to porn sites will be low one month and you will have very little money coming in.

And when you consider that both of these sponsors are regularly producing new sign ups for me (the majority of which are converting to full membership), and that, seeing how well they convert, I will be making more porn blogs and sites to promote them and get more sign ups, you would have to say that Revshare is the best long term deal.

It is true, I guess, that had I been able to put Pay Per Sign Up affiliate codes in my links to these sponsors at the start, I probably would have done so, especially when seeing how good the sign ups were. In this case, I could have been a few hundred dollars better off by now. But that would have been it. No long term rewards. And on a ‘dry month’ with few sales for these porn sponsors, I probably wouldn’t have made their payment limits to receive a cheque.

So in this case Revshare still seems to be the best option.

And this makes me wonder about those emails…

My suspicion is that these two porn sponsors have ‘chosen me’ because either:

Everyone is receiving the same email, or…

I am considered a small fish in a big pond. As a new affiliate with relatively few sign ups (compared to those who have been using the sponsors much longer), paying someone like me month after month, when they could have paid me once per sale and then walked away, is not a profitable exercise for them.

They do not know that I intend to push their porn sites for all they’ve got over the next few months. They are more likely to think I am one of those affiliates who sits back after making a few sales, and just lets the Revshare payments trickle in regularly without further work.

Of course, I could be wrong and these two porn sponsors could simply be testing out payment by PPS and I really could have been ‘one of the chosen few’…

In fact, it was those emails which prompted me to look at my stats for these sponsors more closely and made me decide, that for these particular porn sponsors, Revshare works.

Nevertheless, there’s no harm in testing their new Pay Per Sign Up plan, is there?

What I will do is set up some new porn blogs specifically for each of these sponsors. One bunch of adult blogs will link to the sex sites with PPS codes and the other will have Revshare affiliate links. The ones with PPS will be kept completely separate from any of my other adult blogs and sites, so that surfers are not confused by having the choice of PPS or Revshare. I will promote each batch in similar ways to all my other blogs and with the same amount of effort.

It will take some months to be able to compare figures in a meaningful way, but It should eventually produce some interesting findings.

There you go. A Test of Pay Per Sign Up Versus Revshare on Make Money Market Porn. Tune in later to find out the results

You will have seen me complaining in the past on Make Money Market Porn about the assumption by some US adult webmasters that my porn blogs, including those not using content from US sponsors, should adhere to all US legislation because they will be viewed by US surfers.

I won’t go into that argument again here, because (a) When I market porn I try to ensure that it does adhere to the principal of 2257 regulations anyhow. This is not because I think that we should all buckle under to ‘the US way’, but because I am a moral person who agrees that underage sex should never be promoted when you make money selling porn and (b) most of my sponsors, whether I like it or not, come from the US and, as they have to adhere to 2257 legislation, then in marketing their porn, they obviously expect me to do so too.

But recently another piece of legislation has been passed and this time, not from the US, but from the UK (similar laws were passed in the EU in January, but this one is even stricter in content). And this could affect all webmasters, adult and mainstream, in the same way that 2257 affects us all.

The New Legislation:

The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 Law came into force on May 28th this year. (That was a link to the PDF file).

If you look at Andy Beard’s recent discussion of this and the comments on the post, you will see that this law not only affects those living and trading in the UK, but could also affect anyone hoping to sell products in the UK, either as a seller, a promoter, or as an affiliate to either.

And the reason why this new legislation does this is that it expects full disclosure if we are making money on the internet, from any source. If you live in the UK (and to a lesser extent the EU), you will be expected to post all details about yourself and your commercial interests. Gone are the days when you could trade under a pseudonym to protect yourself, not only from spammers, but from those who have no right to that knowledge in the first place and could even do you or your company harm if they found out.

The argument in the legislation is that this is to prevent people making money by pretending to be someone else or posting spurious claims or false ‘closing dates’ on products. But it opens up much wider possibilites for anyone wanting to control commercial ventures on the internet than this.

If you live in the UK, look at this post from Payment Blogger which explains how you should be declaring yourself and your commercial interests on your blog or site. No anonimity is allowed, even if for your safety and peace of mind, full disclosure is necessary.

And if you are a UK or EU citizen and you think you can still get away with all this by using a proxy at all times and a fake address, check this out: How to blog anonymously. It’s not good news either…

Of course, the new legislation does not directly apply to webmasters, adult or otherwise, living and working in the US, but they could be applied if you ever intend to visit the UK. After all, as US webmasters have been quick to point out regarding 2257 regulations, if you market porn on the web, you cannot control your audience, therefore those who purchase sex site membership through your affiliate link could be living anywhere in the world…

So, if you are a US adult or mainstream webmaster and you want to visit the UK for a holiday, after you have made your money selling porn, you might just want to consider the above legislation and how it could apply to you.

Either way, all this legislation, US, UK or EU, puts even more pressure on anyone trying to make money on the internet, whether they market porn or simply want to sell a stupid ebook. So who does it benefit?

At the end of the day I think it benefits no one, particularly those the legislation is supposedly trying to protect. All it does is tie all of us trying to earn an honest living into even more knots and affects our ability to remain private and feel safe with our legitimate business interests. Personally, I feel it is more of the same old thing, trying to control how everyone does business and keeping more tabs on us. Of course not everyone may agree on that…

When you want to make money legitimately selling porn on the internet, your life is not your own any more. Not that it ever was…

a

Webmasters who make money from marketing porn usually do this by sending surfers, through affiliate links, to sign up as members of particular online sex sites. However, when a newbie adult webmaster looks for his or her affiliate links, the choice can be a little overwhelming. Should he choose PPS or Revshare? Should he offer trials? What about consuls? Making decisions about this can be a daunting task for the beginner. So let’s have a look at some of the main linking terms:

Consuls:
Whether or not to use consols (pop ups) to help you make money from your links. You will find a post here about this.

Pay Per Sign Up:
Pay Per Sign Up (PPS) is based upon the payment a surfer makes when he or she signs up for membership of a porn site by clicking through your affiliate link. The amount the surfer pays (and the money you make for the sign up) will vary according to the type of sign up and the sponsor.

Smaller sponsors will offer as little as 5 dollars PPS, while other larger sponsors can offer up to 100 dollars PPS (especially if they are promoting a particular site at that time). The average PPS I have found to be around 35 to 45 dollars.

PPS rates will also vary according to the type of sign up made (for instance trial or full membership). You should be given this choice to market via your affiliate links.

Trials:
Many porn sponsors offer ‘trial memberships’. Basically, the surfer signs up by giving their name, address and credit card number. They then have so many days to view and download videos and pictures from the porn site they have chosen (and often from others within the membership scheme also). After that set time, if they haven’t cancelled their credit card payment to the sponsor, they will be billed for full membership.

Trial memberships can vary in price from absolutely free (Asian Chicks American Dicks for example), to one, two or five dollar trials. This is good value to a surfer with a fast internet connection, because they will be able to download a whole lot of porn in that short time. However, the sponsor is obviously hoping that they wish to remain signed up or are unable to get all the porn they need before their time is up.

Some trial porn site memberships offer only limited access to the full membership sites, but usually still enough to make the trial membership worthwhile. Obviously the sponsor hope that ‘glimpses’ of what they are missing will further tempt the surfer to remain as a full porn site member.

PPS and Trials:
If you choose to earn money by PPS, you will often be given the choice of whether you want your surfers to be offered a trial or not. This will very much depend on the porn site or group of sites you are promoting. The one time payment you get for a trial membership sign up will not usually be much less than the one time amount you are paid for full membership, so, in my opinion (and of course opinions do vary on this) trials are well worth considering for PPS, particularly as you will be competing in a market where so many other adult webmasters will be offering them.

When you may not get the full PPS amount:
Sometimes you will opt for trial PPS, or just PPS, as your affiliate link, but the sponsor will be unable to achieve this, perhaps because the surfer’s credit card cannot be accepted for various reasons. In this case some porn sponsors offer the surfer other options (telephone payment, cheque payment etc). If this happens, you will still have made that sale, but the money you receive for it will be based on revshare amounts, often with the charges for the transaction taken out first, so payment will be quite small. Either way, you should still get paid for the sign up.

Thinking about PPS:
What you have to remember is, if you choose PPS, you will receive only one payment. If the surfer decides to remain with the porn sponsor and pay monthly, you will receive no more payments for this. Therefore, although PPS can be a very good way to make money quickly from porn, you need to think about your options carefully. For instance, do you think the surfer will remain with the sponsor after their trial or first three months? Is there enough sex on offer (or of the particular niche they are looking for) for them to consider it worthwhile to remain?

Not all porn sponsors offer PPS. In this case you will usually be offered different grades of Revshare.

Revshare:
Most porn sponsors offer Revshare and many offer you the choice of Revshare or PPS, so in these cases you have to weigh up the pros and cons and try to decide which is the best to use when you market porn for a particular sponsor.

With Revshare, you will get a percentage of all payments made by the surfer to the porn sponsor. This can vary, but many sponsors offer between 50 and 60 percent, some even more. Some sponsors will deduct the cost of the payment transaction before working out your percentage, others will give you a percentage of the gross amount paid.

Revshare payments are not a ‘quick money making fix’. Your first payment could be as small as 3 or 4 dollars or even less (and you will have to wait for it until your money made for that particular sponsor [or, if CCBill, that week or month] has reached a minimum amount). Nevertheless, over time this can give you an ongoing income which can come in handy during ‘dry spells’ when no one seems to want to sign up with your porn sponsors, and we all get these.in varying degrees.

Revshare and Trials:
Many sponsors who offer only Revshare still give you the choice of whether or not you offer your surfers a cheap trial. Trial conversion payouts for Revshare are very small, as they really are a percentage of the amount paid at that time by the surfer. Personally, if one of my sponsors offers only Revshare, I tend to opt for no trials (unless I know the site has loads of content in the niche the surfer is looking for), but that’s just personal to me. In any case, some sponsors do not give you the choice and will offer your surfer a trial whether you want them to or not.

Making Decisons about Revshare, PPS and Trials:
So which should you decide on, Revshare or PPS? Trials or no Trials?

The decision is, of course, up to you and the way you want to make money when you market porn.

When comparing the option of Revshare versus PPS (if you have the choice), you need to think about whether you prefer to make money quickly or have an ongoing income.

You also need to ask yourself whether, if you were that surfer, the sponsor would offer you enough porn to make a prolonged stay worthwhile. This will apply to trials also.

Deciding on Revshare or PPS can also vary according to niche. For instance, if you are marketing a very specific niche and you know that very few sponsors (apart from yours) have enough good content to appeal to your surfer, then you can make a fair guess that he or she will want to remain with your sponsor. Revshare in this case could seem like the best option.

However, if your blog or site is aimed at a very widely covered porn niche (teen for example), then you have to remember that there are thousands of sponsors out there offering this niche, so why would the surfer want to remain with the one you are marketing after the intitial sign up?

Nevertheless, even in more general niches, you could find a sponsor who offers something you feel is so specific that, once your surfer has signed up, they may well want to remain.

Your sponsor could also be offering access to a load of other sites with membership which will interest your ‘general surfer’ for a long time. Again, the decision has to be yours.

When you begin your career as an adult webmaster who wants to make some serious money out of marketing porn, the choice of Revshare or PPS, trials or no trials can seem like just one more hurdle to overcome. I myself went for PPS with cheap trials wherever I could at the start, because I needed to make money quickly. Now, after some time, I am trying out other options.

And you can always experiment to see if you want to change your mind. Here is one way to do this:

Testing Revshare against PPS:
If you are getting a very high rate of sign ups for one particular sponsor (and particularly if it’s for one specific site) and your links are all PPS, you could always try a blog or two with Revshare links instead (you will need to make these completely separate blogs or sites so as not to confuse your surfers) . You will need to monitor these closely (via stats and the campaign codes you use), and remember that it will take time for your new blogs or sites to get enough clicks to make a fair comparison, And then, a few months down the line, you could well get the answers.

Conclusion:
Whatever you choose as a linking plan when you set out to make money from selling memberships to online porn sites, remember, it is often your choice and nothing is set in stone. You can always change your mind. The good thing about being an adult webmaster is that you usually get several choices on how you make some cash in this game, so why not use many of them and learn as you go along?

If you have your own hosting and you wish to make money from porn blogs, you are probably making them on Wordpress, as it is the most popular platform for self-hosted blogs on the net, including those which sell access to sex sites.

For newbies just starting out on paid hosting, I would recommend somewhere like Hostgator which has cPanel and ‘fantastico’ for one-click installs (and upgrades) of Wordpress. With cPanel you can install all your Wordpress themes easily, just by uploading them to Wordpress Content>Wordpress Themes in the particular blog’s directory and then click on ‘Design’ inside your blog’s Admin panel and select the theme you have installed. Nice and simple.

When your aim is to make money by promoting membership of sex sites you will want to consider the theme you use very carefully. Some themes you can use in mainstream marketing (or for personal blogs) may not be at all suitable for advertising porn pictures and video clips. For example, anything religious would probably not be such a good idea (and the theme designer may well object), and many ‘family-based’ themes would be a no no - especially if they have any reference to anyone underage in the images used in the template. The last thing you want to do is attract the wrong type of people to your blog by giving the wrong message.

Looking for a good theme for an adult blog or porn blog is not always easy. There are a host of ‘general’ themes you can download for free, but if you want a theme which says out loud ‘this is a porn blog’ then you will probably have to adapt a general theme yourself by changing the header image. You also have to consider that things like ‘recent comments’ and the ‘about me’ page will probably be unnecessary if you want a straighforward blog just to market porn.

However, there is a growing number of ‘adult’ themes you can use - for free. The biggest list of these I have found so far is on the JJS Porn Wordpress Themes site. At the last count there were 36 there. The themes do vary in quality and type (some are widget ready, others are not, some are scrolling, some are fixed width etc). You may well have to change a little of the coding to get them working as you would like for a porn blog, but they are all very useable. I have tried several and currently use a couple of them running on different adult sites.

As a personal preference, I normally use more general themes. I find them, on the whole, much less cluttered and often easier to use and adapt. Even having taken the previous considerations into account about what you should never use as a theme when you market porn, you can still find a host of themes out there which you can use for your porn blogs.

However, one of the most important things you need to think about when using a Wordpress theme to make money from selling membership to sex sites is how search engine friendly your blogs are and how well they are going to market porn for you. And this entails more than simply using plugins like All in One SEO.

When you search for free Wordpress themes, you may well find yourself downloading some which contain a load of spammy links and keywords hidden in the theme itself. These will do you no good and in SEO terms, they could do you a great deal of harm. I guess if you know what you are looking for and have the time, then you could go searching through the templates and remove these parasites, but why waste your time which could be better spent making money from your porn blog? The best way to go is to find some clean, SEO friendly themes.

The best resource I have found for SEO Wordpress Themes is at Courts Internet Marketing School. On the post linked to here, he gives the reasons why he has chosen the themes. Court has gone through all of them with a fine tooth comb and taken out any parasitic links as well as making the themes more SEO friendly. Here is the page where you can download the free themes (there are about 100 of them now, by the way, not 48 as in the original post). There is also an update of one of his most popular themes - Dateless Sniper - on this post. This has been made to combat a ‘broken themes’ issue which occured in the recent Wordpress upgrade, so is well worth considering by anyone whose themes do not work properly since Wordpress 2.5/2.51.

While you are browsing those free Wordpress themes you just might want to have a look at some of Court’s other posts. As far as I know (and who really knows for sure…), he is not marketing porn, but his knowledge of SEO and his marketing skills are pretty damn good. You can use many of them to market porn and make a good deal of money, so it’s definitely worth having a look

And while you are doing that, I am off to do a further search of all my self-hosted porn blogs to have another look for spammy links. I want make money for marketing porn. I don’t want to give away links to some other crap. This may take some time

I’m female, I make porn blogs, so you may ask why none of those blogs contain porn for women. Why instead are they full of images which are unlikely to attract many women, such as girls with big boobs being pounded hard all ways by guys with great big dicks?

Truth to tell, despite searching a wide range of sponsors, I have yet to find any women’s porn which interests me, leave alone is capable of turning me on.

Most of the so-called ‘porn for women’ appears to be full of ’sexy pics’ of ‘hunks’ posing in various stages of undress. But there’s something about these ‘hunks’ which gives me the feeling they are gay…. Now, I have nothing against gay sex at all; some of my best surfers are gay, but gay men don’t turn me on (well, not the ones who pose for these particular ’sexy pics’ anyway).

There appears to be some sort of agreement (drawn, no doubt, from flawed surveys) among the few sponsors who offer ‘women’s porn’ that women are turned on by fantasy, while men are turned on by visual images. Take that vastly overworked assumption and add it to statistics which show that women buy more books and magazines than men, and ‘porn sponsors for women’ seem to have come up with the idea that women’s porn should consist of sexy pictures and access to ‘romantic fiction’,

But how many women are going to pay good money to subscribe to a porn site offering them only these things, when they can get all of them freely by reading erotic blogs and buying glossy magazines?

There is one sponsor in the ‘women’s porn’ niche who I do promote, And that’s Sssh.com. They offer quite a reasonable selection of porn for women, including erotic photos, sexy movies, hot audio stories and ‘forbidden fiction’. Okay, their site is still in the ‘women want to read’ format, but their videos are explicit and at least most of the guys in their movies and pictures do act as if they are straight… The owners of Sssh.com are all women, who say they are “exploring the depth of female sexuality” and I guess they are trying their best. They offer affiliates a whole range of FHGs of pictures of the day and free movie clips.

But so far Sssh.com has done nothing for me in terms of conversions. Some of this will be down to the fact that the only place I promote them is on one general erotic blog (not ‘pretty girl’) which I do not advertise in many places. It does have its regular readers, but I have no way of telling whether or not any of them are female.

At one time I thought it could be a good idea to set up a ‘porn for women’ blog, However, to do that I would have needed more sponsors than Sssh.com, as, although their member’s area has loads of content, the free content they currently provide to affiliates would not be enough to keep a blog running for very long. So I let the whole thing slide and got on with promoting my big busted girls

But my interest in perhaps making another attempt to market porn for women was peaked today when I read an article in The Daily Californian, entitled Fury of a Woman’s Porn. The writer was talking about her research into porn for women and she too found it extremely limited.

Rebecca C. Brown, like me, is a feminist who has no problems with liking porn. She just wants to see porn that intelligent, free thinking women can watch without feeling they are being insulted. As she said:

it’s annoying that almost all porn involves women being assaulted in some way by a really big penis. There’s nothing empowering about a cock slap.

And that’s one of the main problems.

Many women watch porn - ordinary porn that men watch. They just get fed up with hearing or seeing the female pornstars being called sluts and ‘having all their orifices violated’. They know it’s a ploy to get more guys to watch the videos. They know that many of the female pornstars are doing okay (many make more money than male pornstars) and that a lot of the language is just a facade.

But my guess is that it makes many women feel a little uneasy. Just think about it. If you were a woman watching your male partner getting turned on by a porn movie depicting a woman ‘being violated’ would it make you feel that good?

I tried to find something more than Sssh.com just to prove to myself that Rebecca C. Brown could have looked further for porn for women and found something she would have liked, but my search was unproductive. I gave up after looking at a few sponsors offering this niche because they obviously didn’t have a clue.

I’ll give you a couple of examples. These are from different sponsors offering ‘porn videos for women’. Just look at a some of these movie titles:

Blackmailed And Buggered
Hitchhiker Girls In Heat
Addicted To Boobs
Naughty Nurses Gangbanged

I can’t see those working well in selling porn to many women can you?

So for now I’ve given up my search for a sponsor who provides porn that I can market to women and actually make some money out of.

However, if anyone reading this has a sponsor who doesn’t fit the above criticisms feel free to let me know. I have to tell you though that I won’t be holding my breath.

a
